Haïti a été officiellement démilitarisé en 1995 par Jean-Bertrand Aristide lors de son retour au pouvoir après 4 ans de dictature. C’est le dernier pays à avoir aboli son armée.
Cependant, la Constitution, qui prévoit l’existence de l’armée, n’a jamais été modifiée et les gouvernements qui se sont succédés ensuite ont progressivement eu l’ambition de rétablir la force militaire, sans grand résultat pour la sécurité actuelle du pays.
A notre connaissance, les forces armées ne disposent pas de matériel militaire lourd. Nous maintenons donc Haïti sur notre liste malgré ses prétentions à disposer d’une armée. Et cela dans l’attente de la construction, de la réalisation et de la stabilisation d’une plus grande paix dans le pays.

Haiti was officialy demilitarized in 1995 by Jean-Bertrand Aristide at his restoration in power after 4 years of dictatorship. The latest country to abolish its army. However, the Constitution, which provides for the existence of the army was never changed ans succeeding governments progressively reinstate the military force, to no or little avail regarding the present security of the country. To our knowledge, the forces have no heavy military equipement, thus we maintain Haïti on our list despite its pretens to have an army. And in awaiting for the construction, realisation and stabilisation of a greater peace within the Country.

Haiti n’a pas à notre connaissance de traité de sécurité militaire générale avec d’autres pays. Les Nations Unies y maintiennent toutefois une force importante depuis longtemps et il existe des traités de coopération en vue de la formation du personnel militaire.

To our knowledge, Haiti has no general military security treaty with any other country. However, the United Nations maintains a large force there, and there are cooperation treaties for the training of military personnel.
