Article 9 of the Japanese constitutution enonces that he country renonces to the right of war and that to ensure that, it maintains no army. The constitution is saddly not applied regarding this clause, Japan has one of the biggest armies in the world.
However, many people in Japan do believe and trust that someday the country will indeed live up to its constitution. Meanwhile, they are very found of what goes on in the countries that did really abolish the army.
Here is the text of a conference given as part of a very big congress (thousands of people) that happened in 2008, in suport of article 9.
